Interviewed by the German Center for Research and Innovation in New York
"Our hands are our most valuable tools, and protecting them is our mission."
This is how Viola Bartels, Co-Founder and CPO of Digity GmbH, sums up her passion for innovation in hand protection technology. Drawing on her background in orthopedic technology and orthobionics, Viola has dedicated her career to researching injury prevention and improving workplace safety.
In a recent interview with the German Center for Research and Innovation in New York, on the Viola shared the story of how Digity came to life, her experience building a groundbreaking start-up, and her vision for the future of hand exoskeletons.

The Spark Behind Digity
Viola recalls how Digity’s journey began. “The idea stemmed from my co-founder, Miguel Bravo Cabrera, whose research on biomechanics and hand mobility laid the groundwork for what would eventually become ARTUS. Initially focused on rehabilitation, we realized the immense potential of applying this technology in industrial environments.”
This realization transformed Digity’s trajectory. "ARTUS became our first product—a finger exoskeleton designed to prevent injuries, enhance productivity, and prioritize safety for workers in demanding roles," Viola explains. She emphasizes that ARTUS is more than just a tool—it's a solution for real-world problems that workers face every day.

Lessons from the U.S. Market
In November, Viola and Miguel took part in the STEP USA University Program, a four-day bootcamp in New York City. “The program was eye-opening,” Viola shares. “It gave us a deep understanding of the U.S. market—both the business culture and the steps we need to take to expand successfully.”
Through workshops and networking, the founders connected with key stakeholders and gained clarity on their U.S. strategy. Viola highlights the value of these connections: “The relationships we’ve built through this program are critical as we move forward.”
What’s Next for Digity
Viola envisions a bright future for Digity. “We’re working on expanding ARTUS’s reach across Europe and beyond. Our goal is to establish a presence in the U.S. with a dedicated team and possibly a base in the near future.”
The company’s roadmap also includes innovative developments: “We’re excited about creating a sensorized version of ARTUS for ergonomic analysis and quality management. Additionally, we’re exploring active exoskeletons for rehabilitation and augmented reality applications,” Viola reveals. For Viola, every step of this journey is driven by a clear purpose: “At Digity, we don’t just create products; we create solutions that empower hands to work safely, efficiently, and with confidence.”

A Journey of Impact
Viola’s story is one of dedication and vision, rooted in her commitment to making a difference. “The impact of ARTUS goes beyond the workplace,” she says. “It’s about ensuring that every worker can use their hands—their most valuable tools—without fear of injury.”
As Digity continues its journey, Viola invites stakeholders, partners, and potential users to join them in shaping the future of handwear.
"This is just the beginning," Viola concludes. "Together, we can redefine how hands work, adapt, and thrive."
